bmj;381/may12_5/p1065/FAF1faBorn and raised in Huddersfield, Lisa Gruszka was first and foremost a dedicated Huddersfield United football fan—her first job was working as turnstile operator every weekend. Knowing that she wanted to care for people from a young age, she first qualified as a nurse from Liverpool University. It was while studying she met her future husband, John, with whom she shared many adventures travelling around the world.While practising as a nurse, Lisa realised she had the skills to become a brilliant doctor and with determination applied to and was enrolled at medical school in Manchester, starting in 2001. As if that wasn’t enough, she went on to get her degree combined with European Studies—speaking French fluently. Lisa qualified in 2007 and immediately started her foundation jobs at various Manchester hospitals.It was during this time that she discovered she had primary brain cancer and underwent two surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, knowing…
