bmj;381/may12_6/p1067/FAF1faA cathedral chorister who was influenced by his father’s early death to study medicine, Martin Eastwood was to gain an international reputation as a researcher, pioneering studies of dietary fibre and of colonic absorption of bile acids while working as an inspirational gastroenterologist at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.As a 10 year old, Martin won a scholarship to Southwell Cathedral choir school, where excellent teaching led to a lifelong love of writing and a strong base in the sciences, both of which he used to good effect through his career. His father died from colonic cancer while Martin was studying for his A levels. He chose to attend Edinburgh Medical School, where he met his future wife, Jenny Lucas, in their first week.After preregistration posts at the Royal Infirmary and a surgical post with Michael Woodruff, he was diverted to research in biochemistry, studying the relation of cholesterol and bile acids…
