bmj;381/may12_4/p1064/FAF1faDavid Lockie was born in Glasgow into a musical family and initially considered a career as a professional violinist, playing in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. However, he was drawn to medicine. After working in Glasgow, he moved to St Mary’s Hospital, London, to continue his training in obstetrics under Ian Donald, whose team was one of the first to use the wartime technology of ultrasound to scan pregnant women. David eventually switched to general practice and moved to Chesterfield, Derbyshire, where he worked until 1992. He then went back to his roots on the west coast of Scotland, taking over a remote singlehanded GP practice in the village of Tighnabruaich on the Argyll peninsula.
