Introduction

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating condition that compromises the ability to remember, think, and take care of oneself. There is no cure and the treatments available today can help with symptoms, but only temporarily. But there is hope. Many experts believe that the greatest chance for truly impacting Alzheimer’s disease involves prevention. Over the past few years, researchers have discovered new methods for early detection and uncovered strategies to possibly protect cognitive function. New therapies are under investigation and results should be coming in over the next several years.

In the meantime, there is plenty that is known about Alzheimer’s disease. Here’s what you’ll find in this report:

In Chapter 1, “What Is Alzheimer’s Disease,” we describe precursors to the disease as well as what happens inside brain cells to cause this disease to occur.

Not all memory problems are caused by dementia. In Chapter 2, “Normal Changes in Memory with Age,” we differentiate memory changes that are expected with normal aging from memory changes that may indicate dementia.

While heredity plays a role in one’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease, other factors also contribute. Chapter 3, “Who Is at Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease?” reviews the latest research on risk factors such as genetics, cholesterol, diabetes, depression, smoking, and obesity. Addressing these risk factors early in life may improve overall health, including brain health, throughout life. Chapter 4, “Can You Reduce Your Risk for Dementia?” discusses vitamins, diet, and the benefits of mental, social, and physical activity.

Chapter 5, “Diagnosis,” describes some of the tests doctors use to diagnose dementia, and includes some early-warning signs that should prompt you to get evaluated. Chapter 6, “How Alzheimer’s Disease Affects Mental Function,” describes the changes in cognitive functioning that can be expected at each stage of the disease.

Chapter 7, “Treatment,” reviews the drugs that are FDA-approved for Alzheimer’s disease. It also discusses other potential treatments. For caregivers, Chapter 8, “Caring for a Person with Alzheimer’s Disease,” explains what can be reasonably expected from someone with Alzheimer’s, and how to handle challenging behaviors. It also describes care options. Chapter 9, “Handling Caregiver Stress,” reminds caregivers not to neglect their own health and well-being while caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease.

Chapter 10, “Practical Advice: Legal, Financial, Healthcare,” reviews the types of decisions that will be necessary after diagnosis, including financial and legal arrangements and the types of professionals to consult.

Chapter 11, “The Future of Alzheimer’s Research,” reviews current research efforts and spotlights future initiatives. Scientists are using newly gained knowledge about the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s to devise strategies to try to stop the disease in its tracks.
