Working alongside senior female doctors could significantly reduce the gender gap in medicine, finds study

The more that female foundation doctors see of senior female doctors during placements, the more likely they are to choose to train in that specialty, research has found.1Researchers from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) explored the factors that influence which specialties foundation doctors choose to train in because of the stark differences in the gender make up of specialties in both the UK and internationally. In the NHS, for example, 70% of doctors training in paediatrics in July 2019 were women, compared with just 35% of those training in any surgical specialty and 20% of those training in cardiothoracic surgery, despite women outnumbering men at medical school.The researchers say it is important to tackle the gender gap “not just because some women may be missing out on high paid and fulfilling jobs, but because as a society we may be missing out on the best talent in the roles…
