Former GP lead for NHS England who downloaded child pornography is struck off

A GP who was director of general practice development for NHS England when he was arrested for downloading indecent images of children has been struck off the UK medical register.Robert Varnam was arrested by Manchester police in 2020 and pleaded guilty in May 2023 to making indecent photographs, having downloaded them from the internet. These included two category A images, the most serious category, involving penetrative sexual activity, sadism, or sexual activity with an animal.Thirteen images were of category B, showing children engaged in other sexual activities. The remainder, 226 photographs, showed category C images that are exploitative but without sexual activity. Most of the images showed children aged 8 to 12.Varnam pleaded guilty and was sentenced last July at Manchester Crown Court to a two year community order, a rehabilitation activity requirement, and 150 hours of unpaid work to be completed within 12 months.
