John York Moore

bmj;378/sep16_6/o2228/FAF1faJohn York Moore was born in Ickleton, Cambridgeshire, to James and Doris York Moore. James was a GP there and subsequently moved to Sawston, a village nearer to Cambridge. John was educated at King’s College School in Cambridge, then at Felsted School in Essex, which was evacuated to Goodrich Court in Herefordshire at the start of the second world war.His medical training was at the London Hospital Medical College, some of which time he also spent in Cambridge, as the college was evacuated there. While in Cambridge he also followed his other interest, which was music—he learnt to play the organ in King’s College Chapel. He qualified in 1945 and did house jobs at Brentford, followed by two years’ national service in the Royal Air Force.
