Got a sweet tooth? Use caution—too much sugar can wreak havoc on health, especially as we age. For older Americans, regular intake of too many sweets can have dire consequences. Studies have revealed some pretty alarming outcomes associated with too much sugar, especially on the heart. High sugar intake can raise blood pressure and stiffen arteries, which in turn, puts us at risk for heart disease and hypertension. There’s also an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, as excessive sugar intake can nudge us further towards blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance. Researchers have also identified that sugar affects the brain as well—too many sugary foods over time can impair cognitive function and can raise the risk for conditions like dementia. Sugar also fuels inflammatory processes and oxidative stress, which further fuels age-related disease. Still want to enjoy sugar? Yes—absolutely you should! However, cutting back on overall sugar intake is a key step in maintaining health and vitality. When possible, choose whole, naturally-sweet foods to satisfy your sweet tooth and keep high sugar foods to a less prominent role in your meal and snack rotation.
