bmj;378/aug05_9/o1955/FAF1faDhanji Damji (DD) Shah was a highly respected and widely loved senior psychiatrist, working in Swallownest Court medium secure psychiatric unit in Rotherham for 32 years before his Parkinson’s disease forced retirement.DD was born to farmer parents in a north Indian farming village. He was one of 10 siblings, and his intelligence and perseverance were noticed early by his parents and elder siblings. Supported to study medicine at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, he qualified in 1973 and moved to the UK in 1977 with an initial interest in obstetrics and gynaecology.DD later found a passion for psychiatry and continued to hone his interest when he settled in south Yorkshire. His acumen as an obstetrician did not leave him as he diagnosed his neighbour’s acute abdominal pain as a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and was widely credited with saving her life.
