RCP president is asked to resign over handling of physician associates row

Senior officers at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) have called on President Sarah Clarke to resign, after over 80 members expressed a lack of confidence in the college’s leadership because of inaction on physician associates (PAs).1The letter, signed by five of the six senior RCP officers, recognised Clarke’s “hard work to try and deal with the challenging matters that have faced the college,” but said that they are “increasingly concerned that she has lost the confidence” of the membership.The officers said they met with Clarke on 9 June and “asked her to resign the role and give our college a fresh start.” They added, “This is a critical time for our profession and we need someone at the helm with the skills to advocate fiercely for physicians.”Signatories included treasurer Simon Bowman, vice president education and training Mumtaz Patel, vice president Wales Hilary Williams, academic vice president Ramesh Arasaradnam, and…
