Experts call for school focused support to overhaul children’s mental health services

Badly needed support for children’s mental health in England should be focused on schools with the creation of “one stop shop” information hubs, according to experts.A new report1 calls for a radical overhaul of the system that provides mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people and warns that currently around a fifth of this population may have a mental health condition.The report published on 26 April by the Centre for Young Lives think tank and the Child of the North initiative—a partnership between Health Equity North and N8 Research Partnership—calls on the government to boost children’s mental health through the education system.Its authors argue that schools have a vital role to play in supporting and promoting children’s mental health and wellbeing as children spend more time in school than any other formal institutional structure.
