What is NHS Practitioner Health, and who funds it?NHS Practitioner Health is a specialist mental health and addiction service for doctors. It was first opened in London in 2008 as part of a pilot with two years of funding. In 2016 it was extended to the whole of England to include all GPs and GP trainees, with the service reporting a “flood” of doctors seeking care. By 2019 it had expanded to all doctors and dentists in England, as a centrally commissioned service costing £11m.Since the early days it has always operated with short term funding for one year. The service also provides treatment for a small number of other NHS staff who cannot seek other help for confidentiality reasons or for whom there are other barriers in accessing services.
