Health visitors provide essential support for children, mothers, and families

Those GPs of my generation (I qualified in 1982) will not be surprised by the benefits of a good health visiting service that allows frequent contact and continuity of care.1 I remember it well and valued it hugely, as did my patients. It’s not just good for children, though. Health visitors are often the first to recognise post-natal depression and provide essential support and safeguarding for mothers being treated in the community. They also have a unique insight into family dynamics and can help mothers at risk of domestic violence. This is much more likely to happen if health visitors and mothers know each other well.
