Junior doctors feel like the lowest priority members of the team

It is positive to see that NHS England is concerned for the “dignity and respect” of medical associate professionals1; I would like the same validation extended to doctors. I think this speaks to a fundamental misunderstanding between NHS England, local trusts, colleges, and the Department of Health and Social Care and the current generation of “junior” doctors.From hundreds of anecdotal discussions with colleagues over the past few years, it is clear that we do not feel dignified or respected. After pay erosion, frequent rotations, the loss of on-call rooms, offices, and adequate mess spaces, the regular uprooting of our lives, the mountains of unpaid mandatory administration, and competition for dwindling training places—on top of all the things we expect like long hours, exams, and the physical and emotional toll of being a doctor—the level of morale is now critically low.
