National Cancer Research Institute to close in “another blow” to UK research community

The National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI), a UK wide partnership between cancer research funders, has announced that it will be closing because of the risk of “operational failure.”1In a letter sent on 26 June, the institute raised concerns over the impact that “uncertainty in the wider economic and research environment” has had. NCRI was established in 2001 to connect funding organisations and identify where cancer research was most needed.When consulting stakeholders last year on its future strategy, NCRI said “significant questions” were raised over the sustainability of its operating and funding model. “We have not been able to resolve these matters in a way that would deliver long term viability for the organisation.
