India investigates alleged leak of personal data from covid vaccination database

The Indian government is investigating reports that the personal information of Indians stored on CoWIN, the Indian government’s web portal for covid-19 vaccination registration, might have been hacked. A reporter for Fourth News, a local newspaper in the southern state of Kerala in India, wrote on 11 June that a chatbot on Telegram, an instant messaging service, was sharing the personal information.1The chatbot, a customer service automation application, revealed the information when a user entered a person’s mobile number or Aadhaar number, the Indian government’s digital ID. The chatbot divulged the name, gender, date of birth, mobile number, identification submitted for vaccination, and the health centre where the vaccination was administered.
