ENT surgeon who performed operations outside his expertise is struck off

A general ear, nose, and throat surgeon who undertook surgical procedures for which he was neither qualified nor equipped, and then changed his account of those operations to conceal his poor decision making, has been struck off the UK medical register.Jose Duarte Tavares, who qualified in Portugal in 1985, moved to England in 2012 and in 2018 began work as an ENT consultant at the Southampton Treatment Centre run by Care UK. His work, a medical practitioners tribunal found, “comprised of outpatient clinics and operating lists dealing with patients requiring ENT surgery.”He was expected to refer complex cases to specialists at the nearby University Hospital Southampton.
