Government agrees to fewer national targets for ICSs but rejects call on prevention spending

Calls for regional NHS bodies to have fewer nationally imposed targets have been agreed by the government.But ministers have rejected other key recommendations to improve and strengthen Integrated Care Systems (ICSs)—including a call to increase the share of their budgets going towards prevention by at least 1% over the next five years.On 14 June the government released its official response1 to a health and social care select committee report2 published in March and a review by ex-Labour Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt3 published in April, both of which focused on ICSs—partnerships created to deliver more joined up health and care across England that became operational last year.In its response, the Department of Health and Social Care said, “The department will review and streamline national targets to ensure that systems are able to focus on improving health for their populations.”But while the government agreed there should be “a continual focus” on prevention…
