Transgender care: 19 US states ban or restrict access with penalties for doctors who break the law

Nineteen of the 50 US states have enacted bans or restrictions on transgender care with many penalising doctors who provide puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgery for children—including 100 years in prison in Idaho, fines up to $25 000, and loss of medical license.1In 10 states the restrictions are already in effect. In the other states the restrictions will go into effect on 1 July, in October, or in January 2024.Most states that ban or restrict transgender care for children are in the southern and central US.
