GPs have backed plans to rebrand themselves as “consultants in family medicine” and called for the immediate merger of the specialist register with the GP register.GP leaders gathering in London last week said that they were sick of the negative reputation of primary care and of feeling “lesser doctors” than hospital colleagues, despite being “expert medical generalists.” Several GPs added that they were depressed by the familiar question, “Are you a consultant or just a GP?”Samantha Fenwick, an Aberdeen GP and medical director for the Grampian local medical committee (LMC), told representatives at the annual conference of LMCs on 19 May that GPs deserved a “fresh start.”“The Royal College of General Practitioners describes GP speciality training as an intellectually rigorous medical training programme.
