Coaching, counselling, and cajoling will get you only so far. Maybe hitting people in the pocket is the most effective approach?This study from Scotland found that the introduction of minimum unit pricing (MUP) of alcohol (£0.50 per unit) three years ago correlated with a reduction in alcohol sales and harms. The biggest fall was among the households that used to buy the most alcohol before the legislation, and the greatest impact was on men living in the most deprived areas who were at most risk of alcohol related harm. The study suggests that restricting cheap alcohol led to a 3% reduction in population level sales, a highly significant reduction of 13% in alcohol related deaths, and a 4% reduction in hospital admissions for alcohol related disease compared…
