Kurt Schwarz

bmj;379/nov04_8/o2627/FAF1faKurt Schwarz was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1928 and moved to Cape Town, South Africa, in 1934. His first postings after graduating were as senior casualty officer at Baragwanath Hospital, Johannesburg, and district surgeon in Transvaal. He served as a ship’s surgeon on the Union Castle Line in 1954. After settling in the UK, Kurt was appointed lecturer in public health at the University of Liverpool in 1957. In 1964 he took up the position of senior lecturer in preventive medicine and public health at the University of Leeds.In 1974 Kurt moved with his family to Christchurch, New Zealand, to establish the new department of preventive and community medicine at Christchurch Clinical School, University of Otago, where he was professor.
