HIV: Two in three people have trouble getting PrEP, finds survey

The UK government’s ambition to end new cases of HIV infection by 2030 is under threat because of problems in access to pre-exposure prophylaxis treatments, charities have warned.A survey of 1120 people who tried to get an appointment to access PrEP at sexual health clinics in England between October 2021 to July 2022 found that two thirds (68%) encountered problems.1 More than a third (35%) waited 12 weeks to be seen, and 57% waited more than 12 weeks, found the survey, by a coalition of HIV and sexual health charities.Almost half (47%) the 79 clinicians who responded to the survey said that there were not enough staff to meet demand, and only 18% said there was adequate support and training to prescribe PrEP.A total of 24 859 people enrolled in PrEP services in the 10 months reviewed, showed findings from a freedom of information request to which 134 (of 151)…
