US research coordinators are imprisoned for falsifying studies

Two study coordinators for a Florida based clinical research company have been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to falsifying clinical trial data.Analay Rico, 37, a lead study coordinator with Tellus Clinical Research, was sentenced to 40 months, and Daylen Diaz, 44, an assistant coordinator, to 24 months, for conspiracy to commit fraud. Both women were also ordered to pay around $2.1m in restitution.In their pleas, they admitted “that they agreed with others to defraud clients paying for clinical trial work intended to evaluate treatments for various medical conditions, including opioid dependency, irritable bowel syndrome, and diabetic nephropathy,” said the US Department of Justice in a statement.Three other Tellus employees have already pleaded guilty and received prison sentences. Nayade Varona, an assistant study coordinator, and Duniel Tejeda, a study manager, each received 30 months. Eduardo Navarro, a nurse practitioner, received 46 months.
