40 Weeks Pregnant

Congratulations! You have made it to 40 weeks. A huge milestone in your pregnancy, since you are now passing your due date – that lovely date you were given at the beginning of your pregnancy to predict your baby’s arrival. But, of course, you know by now that babies have a mind of their own and will arrive in their own time. Did you know that the average gestation age for a first baby is 40 weeks plus five days? And, if you’ve given birth before, the average is 40 weeks plus three days.

How is your baby growing when 40 Weeks Pregnant?

Your baby now measures between 46cm to 54cm from head to toe and weighs from 2.6kg to 4.3kg. Their head circumference ranges from 32cm to 37cm. You should still be experiencing your baby’s typical movements, so call your midwife or doctor if you have any concerns. Your little one is full-term and is ready to come any day now! Hang in there.

What You May Feel

Some women can feel impatient to give birth. While, in comparison, others are happy to be pregnant that little bit longer. Friends and relatives may start “checking in” to see if the baby has arrived yet. It can be a little discouraging if you pass your due date with no sign of your baby’s arrival. On the other hand, you may have lots of signs of labour right now. Some indications that you are in pre-labour include “a show” (this is your cervix dilating slightly and releasing the mucous plug, which can happen weeks, days or right before baby’s birth). Also, your baby may have dropped further into your pelvis, and the Braxton Hicks contractions become stronger.

Tips when you are 40 Weeks Pregnant

If in doubt, always time your contractions. There are plenty of phone apps that you can download to help you to keep track of them.  The contractions will be approximately three minutes apart and last for one minute (or longer) each in established labour. It is a good idea to give your midwife, the birth centre or the hospital a call ahead of time to let them know you may be in established labour.
