bmj;378/sep16_9/o2220/FAF1faElizabeth Johnson (“Liz”) completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Cardiff in 1976. As a student, her interest in haematology was stimulated by the late Professor Allan Jacobs. After house jobs in Cardiff, Liz completed her general medical training in Leeds and York and spent a year as a registrar in general pathology and microbiology in Leeds. She joined the Yorkshire regional haematology training rotation in 1982.Liz enjoyed the busy combination of clinical and laboratory medicine offered by a career in haematology and was never afraid to question and, if necessary, challenge accepted orthodoxies. She had a particular interest in improving the rational use of haematological investigations by physicians and surgeons, focusing on evidence of patient benefit, and was ahead of her time in collecting data in what would now be called service improvement projects.
