STAT+: Pfizer will sell its patent-protected medicines and vaccines to poor countries at low prices

In an ambitious move to widen access to its medical products, Pfizer said Wednesday that it plans to provide nearly two dozen patent-protected medicines and vaccines, which are already available in the U.S. or European Union, at not-for-profit prices to 45 poor countries.

Under the initiative, Pfizer will start shipping its products — including its Covid-19 vaccine and antiviral pill — to Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, and Uganda later this year, although the effort will eventually focus on 27 low-income countries and another 18 lower-middle-income countries, most of which are located in Africa. Also on the list are Haiti, Bangladesh, and Tajikistan.
