Baby Wipes

When baby wipes first appeared on the market in the late 1970’s they were renowned as something akin to a modern miracle. Rather than wet washers that had to be washed and could house bacteria, here was a disposable version that was portable, already moist and smelled delightful. While relatively expensive within the currency of the day, by the 1990’s the market had been flooded by innumerable versions of the baby wipe used by parents using both cloth and disposable nappies alike.

Harmful ingredients

While a great time saving and certainly reducing the potential for cross-contamination presented by cloth wipes, baby wipes contained many unfriendly ingredients which were harsh on the baby’s skin. Examples of these are alcohol, fragrances, and preservatives, along with a litany of nasty chemicals, which were common ingredients in the fluid used to moisten the wipes. Moreover, apart from promoting skin drying, nappy rash and conditions like eczema, the wipes were also agony on a chapped, chaffed or rashy bottom. Remember, always keep in mind that the delicate skin of a baby’s bottom is five times thinner than that of its adult counterpart!

Modern-day

Modern-day they are different, right? Wrong! Despite these revelations and most companies removing alcohol and offering fragrance-free varieties, baby wipes still contain several harmful chemicals. Besides, just read the list of ingredients on any average packet, and you will find words you likely cannot pronounce belonging to chemicals and additives you know little about. But the reality is that effective baby wipes can be produced without these chemicals. So the question is this. Considering how many times a day you will use your baby wipes if you don’t have to put chemicals on your baby’s bottom, why would you?
