Opinion: Listen: A Filipinx physician on health disparities disguised by data

When data shows that Asian Americans are faring better during the pandemic than other racial groups, physician and researcher Carlos Irwin A. Oronce knows that isn’t the whole story. The first nurse to die from Covid-19 in Los Angeles was Filipinx, and more stories continue to emerge about how hard Covid-19 has hit Filipinx health care workers. Yet it’s difficult to find data specifically about the Filipinx population from within the Asian American racial group to back up these stories. Oronce says that needs to change.

“For many in in the United States, ‘Asian American’ doesn’t really feel as relevant as, say, their specific ethnic identity,” Oronce said.
