Struggling doctors reduce hours to avoid burnout, finds GMC survey
Increasing numbers of doctors are looking to cut their hours or leave the NHS, the General Medical Council has warned in its annual workplace report published today.1Of the 50 000 doctors currently working in the UK who were sent the online survey, 4288 completed it online during September and October 2023—a 9% response rate, the highest since the survey began in 2019.The GMC weighted the results, taking into account age, registration status, ethnicity, and where respondents gained their primary medical qualification, to ensure the responses were representative of the UK doctor population.“The vicious cycle of unmanageable workloads, low satisfaction, burnout, and doctors leaving UK practice, which we have described previously, persists,” concluded the report.An increasing number reported that they are “struggling”—regularly working more than their rostered hours and feeling unable to cope with their workload.
