Valerie Graves

bmj;386/aug08_13/q1737/FAF1faValerie Graves (née Scotland) will be remembered as the co-founder of the Medical Recording Service, for which she received an OBE in 1964.Valerie was born on 12 June 1924 in Rotherham, Yorkshire, the second daughter of a GP. Shortly after her birth the family moved to nearby Brighouse, where they remained until 1942. She attended St Felix School in Suffolk until the war interrupted her studies there. She completed her schooling at Princess Mary’s High School in Halifax.She was a brilliant student at University College Hospital (UCH), winning numerous awards (despite the disruptions of London’s blitz) and qualifying in 1946. While at UCH she met her future husband John Graves, a fellow student. They went on to form an exceptionally happy partnership, both privately and professionally, until John’s death in 1980.After medical school Valerie and John settled in Writtle, Essex, where John became a partner in the local GP practice….
