Consider Facial Rejuvenation to Achieve a Refreshed Appearance
Aging is a privilege that most of us appreciate, but the visible signs that accompany it are often a different matter. As skin naturally loses elasticity and firmness over time, some women consider facial rejuvenation to address common signs of aging, such as sagging, wrinkles, and diminished facial volume.
There are various ways to achieve a refreshed look, including both surgical and nonsurgical options, each offering unique benefits, risks, and recovery times. This article explores facelifts, eye lifts, and chin lifts, as well as non-surgical rejuvenation alternatives like Botox, fillers, and radiofrequency treatments.
Surgical Facelift
A full traditional facelift is a surgical procedure that tightens sagging skin, smooths deep wrinkles, and repositions facial muscles. For women over 50, it can significantly reduce the visible signs of aging, offering a refreshed and, in some cases, a younger look. Recovery typically takes about four to six weeks, during which swelling and bruising gradually subside.
When is the right time to consider a facelift? “The biggest misconception about facelifts is that people should wait until their skin is very loose and they see visible deep jowls before exploring this surgical procedure as an option,” says Leslie E. Cohen, MD, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, NewYork Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medicine. “Some women may be better suited for a facelift at an earlier stage due to their skin type. For them, surgery may provide a more natural result than relying on dermal fillers as an interim solution,” says Dr. Cohen.
Mini Facelift
A mini facelift is a less intensive procedure compared with a full facelift, aimed at addressing moderate sagging specifically around the jawline and lower face. It involves smaller incisions around the ears, allowing the surgeon to lift and tighten underlying tissues. With a shorter recovery time of about one to two weeks, it offers a quicker option than a full facelift but achieves subtler results. Generally, a full facelift’s effects last 10 to 15 years, while a mini facelift, targeting more superficial layers, typically lasts around five to seven years. Skin type, age, lifestyle, and genetics can all affect the longevity of results.

“Everyone has different skin elasticity, and that can affect how long facelift results will last. When deciding between a full facelift and a mini facelift defer to the surgeon who you have chosen to perform the procedure. The surgeon will recommend the best surgical approach for your face,” says Dr. Cohen. Both types of facelifts can have their longevity extended with good skin care, sun protection, and maintenance treatments. “Skin peels and various nonsurgical skin tightening treatments using lasers and other devices, can significantly extend the lifespan of your facelift,” says Dr. Cohen.
Eye and Neck/Chin Lifts
A neck/chin lift is an excellent option for a woman who does not want to commit to a full facelift. This procedure focuses on tightening loose skin and removing excess fat around the chin and neck, helping to reduce jowls and define the jawline. The results can be quite effective in creating a more youthful and contoured appearance, especially for women who are mainly concerned with sagging in the lower face and neck.
Upper and lower eye lifts, also known as blepharoplasty, are performed by plastic surgeons and some oculoplastic surgeons. These surgeries help create a more alert, youthful appearance.
“An eyelift or blepharoplasty generally has a short amount of downtime, can potentially be performed as an in-office procedure— sometimes while awake with minimal anesthesia—and can provide a very refreshed appearance, with imperceptible scarring. This can be combined with a facelift or separate from a facelift,” says Dr. Cohen.
Noninvasive Treatments
Botox, dermal fillers, and radiofrequency (RF) treatments are nonsurgical facial rejuvenation options. Botox works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause “crow’s feet” around the eyes, forehead lines, and frown lines. It can also be used to treat the platysma muscles in the neck to improve the contour of the neck and jawline. The results typically last three to six months. Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that are commonly used to plump up areas such as the cheeks, under-eye hollows, and lips. Fillers generally last six months to two years. RF treatments use heat energy to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin, resulting in tighter and firmer skin over time.
If you’re considering facial rejuvenation, consult with a qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist to discuss your goals. Ultimately, the optimal treatment plan will depend on factors such as your skin type, age, and desired outcomes.
