bmj;378/jul29_7/o1879/FAF1faSydney Cadzow Campbell Scott (“Scottie”) attended Merchant Taylors’ School in Crosby, Liverpool, then King’s College School, Wimbledon. He subsequently trained at Guy’s Hospital, where he was a house surgeon in the department for ear, nose, and throat medicine. Afterwards he took up senior house officer positions at Lewisham Hospital. His MD thesis was on the subject of baby development.In 1956, he married Margaret Barrie (a fellow student at Guy’s, who became a consultant neurologist).He had a successful rugby playing career, being selected for the KCS Wimbledon 1st XV at the age of 16, playing for Surrey School Boys, and playing in the Hospital Cup for Guy’s Hospital. He thought that his application to Guy’s to study medicine was helped by a shiny black eye he had when interviewed.
