Her secondary school was evacuated to Alnwick Castle during the war, and she had happy memories of lessons conducted on the ramparts.After house officer posts at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, she moved to Newcastle General Hospital’s obstetric department. She remembered cycling from the nurse’s home (where female medical staff resided) through a tunnel under the West Road and down the length of the hospital main corridor to the labour ward at night.After an assistant post in general practice in Stamfordham in Northumberland she married fellow graduate Brian Crawford. They settled in Gateshead and had three sons (one a recently retired consultant anaesthetist at the RVI).
