Just In: Western Diet Can Impair Brain Function
Eating a western diet—highly processed and refined foods high in sugar, salt, fat, and protein from red meat—for as few as seven days may negatively affect brain function and appetite regulation, say researchers. Scientists divided 110 lean, healthy students aged 20 to 23 into two groups. Half ate their normal healthy diet and the other half ate a western diet, which included lots of fast food. Before and after each meal both groups completed memory tests and ranked their desire for high-sugar foods. Compared to the first group, the western diet participants showed a decline in memory, which correlated with a decline in appetite control.
