Consume Green Tea and Live Heart-Disease Free Longer

Habitual tea drinkers in the China-PAR study lived 1.41 years longer free of heart disease than those who didn’t drink tea, reports a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, Jan. 8, 2020. Participants (100,902) sat for interviews and filled out questionnaires about their prior year’s tea consumption. Two follow-up surveys were conducted over a median period of 7.3 years. Blood pressure was taken and blood drawn to evaluate lipids and glucose. Participants were divided into three groups: those who never drank tea, those who began or stopped after the first interview, and those who consumed tea more than three times a week. Overall,  tea consumption was associated with reduced risks of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, particularly among habitual tea drinkers. A separate Chinese study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nov. 11, 2019, linked higher tea consumption (especially green) with a lower risk of stroke.
