Did You Know? A Good Incentive for Growing Your Own Garden

Current worldwide farm production doesn’t produce enough fruits and vegetables to meet daily dietary requirements for the 7.7 billion people on Earth, according to research published in PLOS One, Oct. 23, 2018.

A team from multiple Canadian universities reviewed the United Nations’ 2011 FAO Food Balance Sheet to understand the number of dietary food servings available worldwide, and compared that and other data to the Canadian and U.S. Department of Agriculture daily portion requirements, to determine the quantities of fruits and vegetables that would be needed to feed the world’s entire population. Their calculations determined that there is an overabundance of grains, fats, and sugars being produced, and not enough fruits, vegetables, and protein to adequately feed today’s human race. This problem, they say, will worsen as the world’s population increases.
