Men who skip breakfast increase heart disease risk

The risk of heart attack or death from coronary heart disease was 27 percent higher in men who did not eat breakfast, according to a 16-year study of more than 27,000 male health professionals. Skipping breakfast may lead to risk factors, such as obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and diabetes, which can lead to a heart attack over time, researchers found. The study also found a 55 percent increase in heart disease in men who regularly ate late at night.

Almonds are filling without weight gain

Eating one-and-a-half ounces of dry-roasted, lightly salted almonds reduced hunger and increased dietary vitamin E and monounsaturated fat without weight gain, research shows. The four-week randomized trial included 137 participants aged 18-60 at in-creased risk for type 2 diabetes. The control group completely avoided all nuts and seeds, while four addition-al groups consumed 43 grams of almonds daily with either breakfast, lunch, or as a morning or afternoon snack. Snacking on almonds was found more effective at moderating blood sugar levels than eating them with meals.

Daily coffee drinking lowers endometrial cancer risk

Eight studies on coffee and endo-metrial cancer risk, which included more than 300,000 women, found that a daily cup of coffee reduced risk by seven percent, according to a report by the American Institute of Cancer Research. Antioxidants found in coffee can prevent DNA damage, improve insulin sensitivity and inhibit glucose absorption in the intes-tine—all of which may contribute to reduced cancer risk. According to the report, other recent findings link coffee consumption with lower risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease, and premature death.
