Use the score to get a resultLast week, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that one in five deaths may be attributable to five modifiable risk factors. But does reducing those risk factors translate into fewer heart attacks and strokes? The Million Hearts Model, a US initiative that encouraged and funded cardiovascular risk assessment and reduction over five years in 40-79 year olds at medium or high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), found that the model reduced the probability of a first time myocardial infarction or stroke compared with controls (7.8% v 8.1%) and reduced the death rate by 4.3%. The greatest benefit was among those at medium risk (10 year CVD risk 15-30%); those at high risk (>30%) were no more likely to live than controls despite the intervention, although their chance of dying specifically of CVD was reduced.
