Mental healthPandemic saw “shocking” premature deathsThe Centre for Mental Health, an independent UK charity, called for urgent action to tackle “shocking inequalities” facing people with severe mental illness (SMI) in England, after data from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities showed that these people were five times as likely to die prematurely during the covid pandemic as people without SMI.1 Among people with SMI, black and Asian adults and people in deprived areas were particularly affected, the data showed.Effects of cost of living crisis are evaluatedIn a survey of more than 1600 adults in Great Britain 60% reported that the cost of living crisis was negatively affecting their mental health, and almost a quarter (23%) reported having problems sleeping because of worries about rising costs.
