Measles: Unvaccinated children may need to isolate as threat of outbreak looms in London
Parents in London have been warned that if their children are unvaccinated and come into close contact with a measles case, they may need to self-isolate for up to 21 days.In a letter seen by The BMJ, Barnet Council asked parents to ensure their families are “up to date with their MMR vaccinations to avoid serious illness or the need to self-isolate and stop a measles outbreak from happening in London.” Haringey Council has sent a similar letter to parents.Earlier this month, NHS England warned that over 32 000 children across London are at risk of catching measles because of incomplete vaccinations, as MMR vaccine uptake is at its lowest in a decade and cases continue to rise across London.1In Barnet, only 72% of children under 5 are fully vaccinated with two MMR doses—well below the World Health Organization’s target of 95%.“Unless MMR vaccination rates improve, London could see a…
