Police expand inquiry into patient deaths at hospital in Brighton

A police investigation into possible criminal negligence at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton has extended its scope to cover a further year and include cases of serious harm as well as deaths.1Sussex Police, which has been looking into around 40 neurosurgery and general surgery deaths between 2015 and 2020, has confirmed that the investigation will now extend to 2021 and will also cover incidents of serious harm.The police said that the investigation, named Operation Bramber, was still in the scoping stage and added, “Inquiries are at an early stage and this does not necessarily mean this will lead to criminal prosecution. We are working closely with partner agencies and the hospital trust is cooperating fully with our review.”Among the cases now under review is that of Lewis Chilcott, who died at the hospital in July 2021 aged 23, after an alleged error in a tracheostomy.The deaths were reported…
