A third of medical students plan to leave the NHS within two years of graduating, survey suggests
One in three UK medical students plan to leave the NHS within two years of graduating, a survey has revealed.The AIMS study, published in BMJ Open,1 is the largest survey of its kind. It surveyed 10 486 (25.5%) UK medical students across 44 medical schools in a bid to understand their career intentions. Pay, working conditions, and work-life balance were the main drivers behind the students’ intention to leave the service.Altogether, 32.5% of those surveyed said they plan to leave the NHS within two years of graduating, with many planning to practise medicine abroad and others wishing to leave medicine altogether.While 84% of those surveyed reported an intention to complete the two year NHS foundation programme, 10% said they wished to leave the NHS after completing the first year, which offers them full GMC registration, recognised internationally.Among students expressing a preference for a destination country, Australia was the most popular,…
