Nottingham trust faces criminal investigation into baby deaths
Police are preparing to launch a criminal investigation into baby deaths and injuries at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where an independent review by the senior midwife Donna Ockenden is looking into failings in maternity services at Nottingham City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre.1Nottinghamshire Police’s chief constable, Kate Meynell, said that her force was in contact with West Mercia Police, which in July 2020 opened an investigation into maternity cases at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, the subject of an earlier review by Ockenden.2“We want to work alongside the [Ockenden] review but also ensure that we do not hinder its progress,” said Meynell. “We are currently looking at the work being done in Shrewsbury and Telford by West Mercia Police to understand how they conducted their investigation alongside Donna Ockenden’s review and any lessons learnt.
