bmj;382/aug25_4/p1941/FAF1faFrom a farming family in Gloucestershire, Jillian Rose Mann (“Jill”) qualified at St Thomas’ and undertook training posts there, at Great Ormond Street, and at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Initially appointed as a consultant paediatrician to Selly Oak Hospital, she was allowed a small amount of time to develop a service for children with cancer at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and later moved there, building one of the largest paediatric oncology units in the UK. In 1977 she hosted the inaugural meeting of the UK Children’s Cancer Study Group, serving for a time as its secretary. A special interest in germ cell tumours led to her involvement in studies that helped develop new treatments. Charitable fundraising was her forte, and the first computed tomography scanner for children in Birmingham was an early success. She was awarded a personal chair in 1997 and retired in 2002.
