Urgent call to protect children and their health in Sudan
The Sudan conflict is severely affecting paediatric healthcare, creating a humanitarian crisis. The ongoing war has led to the destruction of hospitals and facilities, and the departure of healthcare workers has created a shortage of medical personnel for children in need.1 Around 368 000 Sudanese children, particularly in conflict areas, lack essential healthcare services.23 Malnutrition, diseases, and injuries from explosives pose severe threats. Displaced children face challenges accessing healthcare in areas with destroyed facilities, resulting in preventable deaths.4 Without vital treatment, those already ill or injured face higher risks, and malnourished children are more susceptible to complications.4The psychological effects of the conflict on children have also been substantial, with an increased risk of mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and behavioural disorders.56 Urgent action is needed to ensure that children in Sudan have access to healthcare services.
