bmj;382/aug04_6/p1792/FAF1faEllen Grant began her lifetime study of the serious side effects of contraceptive hormones at University College Hospital, London, in 1960 with Eleanor Mears and Gerald Swyer of the Family Planning Association (FPA). While working on the FPA’s first major British study of over 60 different oral contraceptive pills, she became concerned that the side effects were being substantially underestimated because of selections, exclusions, early patient dropouts, and possible long latent periods. A Lalor Burdick award helped fund Ellen’s research and in 1985 she authored The Bitter Pill—how safe is the perfect contraceptive? In 1994 she wrote Sexual Chemistry, in which she also warned of the side effects of hormone replacement therapy.Later, Ellen worked with the Council for Investigation of Fertility Control at the Migraine Clinic, Charing Cross Hospital, London.
