His parents were doctors but it wasn’t until after the second world war that he considered medicine as a career himself. A well liked and respected GP, he started his career when the NHS was in its infancy and general practice was undergoing significant changes. After an interesting and varied career, he joked that retirement was “boring.”Martin Edwin Parry was born in Pwllheli. His father, Robert, worked in public health in Bristol and as honorary physician to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. His mother, Elsie, was a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving in the wartime blood transfusion service.Because of his parents’ work, Martin and his siblings were evacuated to Canada during the war, where he lived until he was 16.
