Raghu Gaind

bmj;382/jul07_7/p1563/FAF1faRaghu Gaind was born in Kashmir to a family that had served the Maharajah for five generations. He came to the England soon after qualifying and completed his psychiatric training at the Maudsley Hospital, London. He contributed to a major study that established that injections of depot fluphenazine reduced relapse rates in chronic schizophrenia. He was appointed consultant psychiatrist at Guy’s Hospital, London, in 1969 and chairman of the department in 1973. Throughout his career, he displayed almost superhuman energy. In 1985 he left the NHS and developed an extensive private practice, particularly of patients from the Middle East. He also set up two nursing homes in Kent.Raghu was an excellent linguist and competent in Urdu, Farsi, and Arabic. As an adviser to King Faisal Hospital, he became popular with the Saudi royal family.A man of great charm he did much to educate and entertain his colleagues. From the 1970s…
