He enjoyed teaching and made microbiology fun for generations of students with his “Bugs for Mugs” tutorials. He served as a reservist with the Royal Army Medical Corps.Registrar of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1987-92, Jon was not only an enthusiast for all aspects of clinical virology but had a particular interest and published on bloodborne infections. He was among the first virologists to pioneer the use of computerised information long before it became standard practice in most laboratories.A love of the sea took him to Cornwall, where he indulged his passions for cooking and sailing. Predeceased by his first wife, Jennifer, he leaves three children, seven grandchildren, and his second wife.
